How to take better selfies for your website and social media
There's no denying it - people buy from people and showing your face on social media is a big part of marketing your business. But I know that taking selfies can feel very self-centered and cringe, especially if you’re in public.
But I’ve been taking my own photos for so long I can be pretty quick and stealthy even in the most awkward situation.
Here’s a few things that might make it easier:
1 ➜ You do you
You don't have to follow the crowd or do what's popular if it doesn't feel authentic. Your home/office background is fine as is and may attract more of your people than a polished setup. Release the pressure to change things, move to a “better” spot, or create a set.
2 ➜ Keep the setup simple
If putting on makeup or getting dressed complicates things, then selfie as you are. If I can show up makeup free (which took a few years) in my pjs, SO CAN YOU! A hot mess selfie is better than no selfie at all.
3 ➜ Find good lighting or edit
With good lighting I can take all my photos on my iPhone with the front facing camera. I just moved into a new house and I’ve been wandering around trying to find the best lighting spots. If the light isn’t great, editing will be your best friend. The edits below took 30 seconds in Canva - the editor inside Instagram works just as well.
4 ➜ Take lots of photos when you feel cute
Photos on my blog and website come from lazy days at home, vacations, date nights, puppy walks, and random events. If I feel good, put on makeup or real clothes, or have a good hair or skin day, I take a selfie. (And usually a 10-30 sec video for Reels, Tiktok too)
5 ➜ Get a tripod or a selfie stick
Yes, seriously. Especially if you’re short with short arms like me. It’s much easier than trying to get all the background, me, and whatever else in one photo if you’re further from the camera.
6 ➜ Record a video
Not only will it give you more content for Reels and Tiktok, but you’ll have more options and find comfortable ways to pose quickly. Record a minute of yourself, move close to the camera and further away. Screenshot the best moments.
It does take practice, but after a while you’ll snapping photos in two minutes and always have a camera roll full of photos for your blog and social media. Tag me on social media @daretogrow.co if you do - I want to see!
